Does your Church Budget have a “Holy Spirit” line item?

South Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

Look at your current church budget for 2025. Look at the different line items: Staff Salaries? Yes.  Building upkeep? Yes.  Rent/Mortgage? Check.  But what about the Holly Spirit?  Does your budget allow for the movement of the Holy Spirit? How much do you budget for the Holy Spirit to move in your church?

Strategic Planning for the Holy Spirit

In your annual strategic plans, do you plan for the Holy Spirit? How do you do that? Romans gives us a hint, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

Let’s say the Holy Spirit is moving in your congregation and there is a movement to expand the church’s presence in the local elementary school to provide tutors for students that are falling behind? This will require the church to make a significant investment in materials, training, and leadership development.  How does the church respond?  Do you cut expenses in another budget area?  Do you go to the congregation with a special monetary request?  Do you seek outside grants? Or do you access a line item in the budget called “Holy Spirit” and respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompting and get the program started right away?

Many churches don’t plan in this manner.  There is not a line item in the budget for the Holy Spirit to move in your church.  Wouldn’t it be better to anticipate that the Holy Spirit will move?  To pray for the Holy Spirit to act?  For the Holy Spirit to move?  Think of the message that sends to your congregation.  It says that your church, in faith, is expecting the Holy Spirit to do great things in your church. You and the church want to be ready.  That is faith! That is leadership!
